AVID
Did you know that college graduates…
…on average, earn $51,000 a year. Over the course of a career, a college grad will make nearly $1 million more than a high school graduate.
…have careers that offer more and better benefits (health insurance, sick leave, personal leave, vacation time).
…have better and more career opportunities.
…have greater job security
…live, on average, nine years longer than those who don’t graduate from high school.
It is obvious that attending and graduating from college provides the means and opportunities for financial security and the perks that go along with it. What is less obvious are the skills and abilities that make college acceptance and college success a reality. Preparation begins early in a child’s educational career with hard work, desire and a goal-oriented mindset, and it continues through careful nurturing of these qualities throughout a child’s high school education.
At Diamond Ranch we provide the continued support to develop these qualities and to make college a reality through AVID. A national program, AVID was instituted at Diamond Ranch in 2013. In that time, 95% of our AVID students have been accepted to four-year universities. Additionally, AVID students have higher overall Grade Point Averages, as well as greater enrollment in Honors and Advanced Placement courses. Additionally 100% of our AVID seniors complete the FAFSA and apply for scholarships as part of their AVID curriculum. AVID emphasizes a deliberate focus on organization, writing, speaking skills, SAT/ACT preparation, and transition into college. Our AVID students work with college tutors weekly, visit college campuses, listen to guest speakers, and enjoy priority registration for regular and summer school courses. Most importantly, the AVID family, that includes AVID students, teachers, college tutors, designated counselor, and administrators, supports each student to ensure their well-being and academic success.
AVID students enroll in an elective class offered during school hours, and are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as band, choir, dance and athletics. Because these activities enrich and expand their classroom education, colleges and universities seek out these students. These AVID Elective courses are taken all four years, culminating in the senior AVID course which supports students as they transition into higher education. Over the past three years, our AVID students have gotten acceptances from the following colleges and universities:
